The following notice has been put up on Trader Joe's web site:

TRADER JOE’S STANCE ON THE SALE OF DUCK MEAT

Dear Trader Joe's Customers:

Recently, there has been raised awareness of the condition of ducks that are being farmed and processed for sale to restaurants and grocery stores. Our customers have told us they are concerned and asked what we are doing about the sale of duck meat.

Currently, the agricultural industry is developing guidelines that will enable the American Humane Society or another independent agency to certify cruelty free growers. This is still in its early stages and will take time to accomplish.

Unless and until such time as a duck farmer can show certification by a reputable and independent agency that his/her operation is a cruelty free grower, Trader Joe's will discontinue the sale of duck meat in all our stores when we have sold through current inventory (approximately November 1).

Sincerely,

Dan Bane
Chairman and CEO
