April 13, both SB1207 and AB2915 were heard at the Capitol. Both
bills would remove protections for kangaroos in California (in
fact, AB2915 was amended to only affect the kangaroo).
SB1207 was to be heard in the Senate
Natural Resources Committee, but was pulled by the author,
Senator Hollingsworth. We have been told that he intends to
re-introduce it next week after he has amended it. According
to the Senate analysis there was no one listed in support of
the bill and in addition to letters from animal protection
groups, 500 letters of opposition were listed.
AB2915 was heard in the Assembly Water,
Parks and Wildlife Committee and was authored by Assembly Member
Firebaugh. Listed in support of the bill was Sunrise Soccer
(who was listed as the sponsor), Adidas America, California
Black Chamber of Commerce, California Chamber of Commerce,
California Hispanic Chamber
of Commerce, California Retailers Association, Laguna Hills
Soccer Club Eclipse.
In opposition, other than animal protection
groups only 8 individuals were listed as being opposed.
Adidas' lawyer was there to testify
in support of the bill.
The bill passed this committee.

PLEASE take the time to handwrite or type out a letter you
can sign to your Assembly Member. Unfortunately, the Assembly
does not seem to be counting e-mails or letters without signatures
(though the Senate did).

for the kangaroos!
