Urgent Action

It has been over a year since Viva!USA had a target for our duck campaign (too many successes will do that!). For those of you who have been involved since the campaign started, we want to thank you for your help to get Earth Fare, Trader Joe's, Wild Oats, Huckleberries and more recently Whole Foods Market to stop buying duck meat from cruel factory farms.

Due to the effects of our campaign, there is currently only one major duck farm in the U.S -- Maple Leaf Farms and its subsidiary Woodland Farms.

In addition, many of the farms we investigated no longer exist, requiring Viva!USA to update our investigations and create new leaflets, posters and video so that our campaign remains accurate and up-to-date.

We are asking you to contact Albertson's (also known as Acme, Jewel-Osco, Savon and Shaw's). They are located in 31 states and have 2,300 stores.

Viva!USA first contacted Albertsons in 2000, again in 2002 and more recently in 2004. Their most recent response to our letter asking them to stop selling factory farmed duck from Maple Leaf Farms was that they are working with the Food Marketing Institute to develop animal welfare guidelines to protect animals (earning them runner up status in PETA's "Proggy" awards).
According to PETA they have shown a willingness to work with animal advocates to improve animal welfare, and as the nation's second largest grocery chain, can have a huge impact on industry standards. Despite these positives, they continue to support inhumane factory farming operations like Maple Leaf Farms. The public needs to let them know that this is unacceptable.

Ironically, Albertsons puts out a publication for new parents called "Ducklings"! Let's speak out for those ducklings and get factory farmed duck meat off their shelves!

Though we will continue our efforts to get Wal-Mart Supercenters (Safeway, Kroger and others ) to discontinue buying duck meat from this farm, Viva!USA has added Albertsons as the primary target in our updated duck campaign.

*Please note that Albertsons will tell you that they are working with FMI (which does not currently have standards for ducks and has created substandards for other farmed animals) and that they are working with the USDA (which does not even have jurisdiction over farms!). They must be encouraged to take a stand now.
